Physician Heal Thyself – A personal weight control challenge!

Who said that? The principle is to apply what you know to yourself. As I was sitting at my desk last night and discussing Hypnotic Weight Control with my wife, Alexandra, she noted that my own weight thermostat could possibly be on the higher side and may need to be reset.  You can imagine how pleased I was to hear that.

So I checked the scales. I haven’t been on a set of scales for quite some time (and much happier for not doing so). They indicated that my weight was 92.9 kgs.I went and checked my BMI (Body Mass Index). 177cm and 92.9 kgs put me as

Your BMI is 29.65

Overweight (BMI 25-29.99) According to the BMI Calculator results, your weight is above the ideal range for your height. Being overweight increases the chances of developing a large range of chronic and serious health conditions. Many of these diseases can be prevented by making changes to your lifestyle. If you improve your diet and increase your level of activity, you can significantly reduce the risks to your health.

Now, you can google for a BMI calculator. Some of the posts indicate that they can be misleading as they don’t take into account body composition ie how much muscle or fat you have. However, even given that I think I ould do with some adjustment :)

That was a little sobering. What is my ideal weight? Back to the BMI calculator and it appears to be 78kg. Lets say its a little out and round it up to 80kg. Thats my target.

MMM What to do?

Please take note of the next sentence as this is where my change started.

I made a decision to lead by example. I’ll do and go through exactly what I do with my clients.

So there you have it. My awareness has created a change in behavior AND I’ve made a decision to change.

You’re invited to follow me on this journey and join me if you wish.

Step 1 – Know what you want, specifically.

In my next post we’ll explore more of knowing what you want and getting in touch with it.

I’ll also let you know any insights I have on the way. Lets have some fun with this.

The cycle from Belief to Action in Weight Control

Belief > Thoughts > Feeling > Action > Belief

That’s the summary of the cycle from belief to action. From our upbringing, from our reference groups, from our experiences we have developed beliefs. Some of these help and empower us. Some of our beliefs don’t help or empower us.

Based on our beliefs, and in the context of weight control, we may have certain thoughts or things that we say to ourselves over and over again like a weird type of negative mantra. eg I’ll never lose weight, weight is so easy to put on, I have to eat so much, I need to comfort or protect myself by eating etc etc and you can write your own in there as well.

With that belief as the context or background you will almost certainly have thoughts congruent with that belief. ie I’ll eat this and feel better. Note that word “feelings” because they drive the desire to take action. This is followed by an action – eating inappropriately. Results…well, they speak for themselves. And with that result of gaining or maintaining additional weight the belief is reinforced.

Now, this works beautifully so that you can maintain the misery of being overweight and “feeling” (and it’s only a feeling) that no matter what you do that you can’t achieve your ideal weight.

The really wonderful aspect of this cycle is that this can work in reverse too. If you change the belief, you can change the thoughts, change your focus, change your actions, get different results and so build a new belief.

WOW! How cool is that? All you have to do is “change your beliefs”. Is that all? And that’s my area of expertise.

Drop me a line to find out more.

Shock, horror! In my next blog I am revealing an ugly personal truth and sharing a truly horrible moment of self awareness. It hurts me but I think you might just gain from it.

Until next time.

Weight loss Versus Weight control

How often do you hear conversations (OK, maybe I was overhearing conversations)  where the subject is about weight loss? Whether I’m walking around the northern beaches of Sydney, in a shopping mall or in the Sydney CBD “weight loss” is a fairly common subject.

Actually, the Australian Bureau of Statistics says that about 54% of Australians are overweight or obese! No wonder its a common topic of conversation.

An interesting question that you may or may not have thought of yourself is “Why, with advanced education, knowledge and the plethora of weight loss centres does the rate of obesity increase in this nation?”(In 1990 the rate was 38%).

I’d like to suggest that what we see at work is the universal law of focus. That is, we get what we focus our attention on. Let me explain – if you are not your ideal weight and you are focusing on that particular weight then subconsciously you are setting your internal thermostat to have that as your normal weight.

Even though you are indirectly targeting a lesser weight, you find yourself focusing about the current situation. You may keep hearing yourself saying “I want to lose X kilos”, “I don’t feel happy when I weigh this much”, “I look terrible at this weight” etc. In fact what is happening is that you are affirming the current unhappy situation with your weight.

There is a better and happier way!

Focus on what you want. Eg I am feeling so great in my new size (X) clothing now that I am my ideal weight of ___kilos. An expert on this subject, Paul McKenna said “people can, you know, achieve their ideal weight by focusing on what they want”.

The path to becoming your ideal weight is to turn your attention to what you want. Now, if you are hearing a lot of mind chatter as you do this it’s just your subconscious checking to see if you really are serious about resetting the “weight thermostat” and changing the goalposts.

People have found that a straightforward path to achieving their new ideal weight is to reset the the thermostat within by way of hypnotic suggestion. Therefore, weight becomes a matter of control rather than fighting the struggle to lose. The big winner is you as you feel happier about yourself each day.

This is the first of a series of post on how to achieve your ideal weight by focusing on what you want rather than on what you don’t want.

A perfect and powerful strategy to create anxiety!

Over the last few years clients have been seeking me out with a number of issues that they are seeking  my assistance to resolve. such as phobias, quit smoking and so on. A recurring theme is anxiety.

It is an interesting thing to ask my clients how they “do” anxiety. What do I mean by this? Simply, I ask them to explain to me what is their strategy – step by step, thought by thought, blow by blow – of how they go from whatever state they are in to the state of anxiety that they experience.

The strategy usually goes something like this:-

1. First, think about a future event that you will be involved in. This is important as you are changing the time frame from “now”.

2. Think of making this event unsuccessful.

3. Turn this thought into a disaster movie that you can replay over and over and over again in your mind.

4. As steps one, two and three take place, simultaneously shorten your breathing so it’s shallow.

5. Tensing up physically while this is happening is also of great assistance.

6. Now increase the vividness of the movie, brighten the colours, increase the sound and ensure there is no escape, no options. (that’s a particularly good twist).

7. Now, as the intensity of your anxiety increases, you can add a very powerful twist by creating an anchor – maybe a phrase that you say, maybe a wringing of the hands, or some other pet habit that goes with it. I can’t overstate how good this step is because once you’ve created an anchor it makes it so much easier to go into that disempowering state easily and quickly whenever you choose to.

How does that sound?

The reverse of this strategy is also useful for the opposite result. Only if you want to that is and people can, you know, choose to have empowering states of mind.

If you want some help and guidance to work on this then let me know.

What I learned from Bob Ansett about Mindset

Had to find a way

Mindset. What an important factor it is in your life to determine what you do, or do not achieve. Do you want to develop a winning mindset?

This week I had the pleasure to listen to and meet with Bob Ansett, founder of Budget Rent A Car. http://www.bobansett.com.au/index.php?page=about

When he spoke, it was with passion and conviction. He told of his journey from one man band in 1965 to a company employing 3,000 and turning over $400million by 1990. This was a man worth listening to! Nuggets of wisdom were there for those who had ears to listen..

As he told his story there was an underlying theme. The “Can do” philosophy. When he was confronted by challenges he said to himself “I have to find a way”. This is the mindset of a high achiever, of a man who doesn’t let things stand in his way, of a man who overcomes the obstacles that are guaranteed to appear in life.

While listening to him I asked myself “What can I learn from Bob that I can apply to my own life?”.  The answer to this was fairly straight forward:-

1. Set goals with a deadline.

2. Be creative and innovative.

3. Excel at customer service.

4. When confronted with challenges ask yourself a powerful question, be steadfast and resolved in finding a “way”.

Bob reinforced these points as we discussed them further in conversation. He is a pretty interesting guy to talk with.

Mindset. “I have to find a way, and I will

How do your own thoughts, questions and mind chatter compare to this? If your thoughts are in alignment with this – great!. If your self talk, questions and statements are not in line with this philosophy then I recommend that you change them. The change in your life that will follow will be an amazing upswing.

Mindset. Have a winning mindset. i wonder how you will find your winning mindset within yourself call me. And I wouldn’t suggest you call me now unless you want to develop a winning mindset.

Good or bad….we are what we think!

When I first heard that phrase years ago I couldn’t even begin to wrap my head around it, let alone consider that I could change my life by changing my beliefs and thoughts.

What if you could change your life by changing your thoughts? Your thoughts are focusing on the things that you believe to be true in your life. You think, you foucs, you become. Before you dismiss this concept have a look at the lives of people close to you. Maybe that person in the mirror as well :) Consider what state someone’s life is in. Listen to their language, look at their actions. These are the clues to what they are thinking and what they believe.

To bring it closer to home. Have a look at your own life (I’ve done this so  I know it can be confronting). Everything around you, your life, is a reflection of your beliefs, attitudes and habits. These direct your thoughts which create feelings, leading to words, giving birth to actions.

If it’s a good life, you can make it even better. If it’s not so good, you have the power and resources within you to make it right. Sometimes we just need someone else to help us navigate to those resources.

Would you like to discover more? Here is an exercise for you. Over the next week be consciously aware of what you think and say to yourself over and over again. Write these things down. At the end of each day have a look at what you’ve written. This will give you a clue to what you really believe.

The feedback on this topic is quite interesting. Stay tuned and we’ll discuss it further.

If you live in Sydney you might be interested in a meetup group called Speed Manifesting Book Study. Speed Manifesting is a book written by a good friend of mine, Lori Mitchell. Speed Manifesting is a very powerful process to bring positive change into all areas of your life. Confusion and the beginning of change!

“Are you absolutely certain about that? ” I asked as we began a Bust A Phobia workshop at The Australian Reptile Park last Sunday.

Three young women had come along to have their fear of spiders removed. At the beginning of the workshop they all rated themselves fairly highly as to how much they feared spiders. Then I asked then how certain they were. The replies were unanimous. They were all absolutely certain! This was interesting to note.

When doing the phobia removal workshops the work is based around changing the internal representations. That is, to change what someone experiences internally when they meet the object of their phobia. It doesn’t have to be physically. It can be the very thought of encountering a spider or snake which may trigger a phobic reaction.

A great place to start is with confusion.

By utilising Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) were able to chip away at their fears, beliefs and strategies around spiders. Becasue they had to come to the workshop and wanted to change it meant they had opened the door to the change process.

Half way through the session when I was checking in on their progress one of the young women made an interesting comment. When I asked her about spiders she said that she was “unsure if she was uncertain” about her fear of spiders. The beginning of the confusion was a great indicator that the phobia removal work was occurring.

Towards the end of the session when asked again about spiders she replied “I am definitely uncertain”. Fantastic.

Now for the test – into the spider exhibit. All three managed to walk through the exhibit without screaming in fear, or shaking, or crying. Compared to when they arrived it was a disctinct change when even the word “spider” created phobic reactions.

There was some signs of a little anxiety. So I offerred a follow up during the week for two of them. The third was quite happy with her outcome.

After the subsequent sessions I was pretty satisfied about their progress. This will be the topic of the next blog post as I utilised a very compelling strategy to continue the change.

You can check out the YouTube clips for phobia removals by searching for waynedonnelly and megablowtorch.

If you think about that thing that you want to change in your own life. Its only a matter of creating a little confusion and changing your mind to change that thing (whatever it is for you).

When you are ready NOW to make that change why not give me a call to help you out. In Sydney 0416 929 636. This change work also works beautifully via skype where I can be called on wayne.donnelly

Enjoy your day!
